How to Track CPD Hours and Supervision as a Coach
As a coach, you track CPD hours and supervision by logging every activity right away with date, type, hours and a short reflection. The end of the year is the moment to check whether you are on schedule for your renewal, so you do not have to catch up on hours in the last year of your cycle.
CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. For credentialed coaches it is not optional but a condition for keeping your credential.
What Do ICF and EMCC Require?
| ICF (ACC, PCC, MCC) | EMCC | |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle | 3 years | At renewal of your accreditation |
| Hours | 40 CCE hours, of which at least 24 Core Competencies, including 3 Coaching Ethics | Documented CPD in a log |
| Supervision | Up to 10 hours of coaching supervision count as Core Competencies | Regular supervision, guideline at least 1 hour per 35 coaching hours and at least 4 hours per year |
| Evidence | Certificates and a record of activities | CPD log with reflection on what you learned |
For ACC coaches, 10 of those hours must also be mentor coaching. Always check the current requirements on your professional body's website, because they are updated periodically.
What Counts as CPD?
- Training, workshops and webinars on coaching
- Supervision and peer supervision
- Mentor coaching
- Conferences and professional events
- For EMCC also self-study and reflection, as long as you record what you did with it
The December Check
- How many hours did I log this year, and how many do I need by the end of my cycle?
- Are the mandatory parts covered, such as ethics for ICF?
- Did I keep proof or a certificate of every activity?
- Is my supervision in proportion to my coaching hours?
- Which training or supervision will I plan for next year? Put it in your annual planning right away.
Tips to Stay on Top All Year
- Log right after the activity. Three months later, you will not remember how long that webinar was.
- Write one sentence of reflection. What did you learn and what will you do differently? EMCC asks for this explicitly, and it helps for ICF too.
- Keep certificates in one place. Not in your inbox.
- Do not double-count hours from before your new system. Record a starting balance and from then on log only new activities.
Tracking CPD in FocusCoachee
FocusCoachee Pro includes a built-in CPD and supervision log. You choose your credential (ICF ACC, PCC, MCC or EMCC), enter your starting balance and then log every supervision, peer supervision or training session with hours and reflection. Progress bars show how far along your cycle you are. When a cycle ends, you archive it and start a new one, with the history kept.
