How to Start a Coaching Practice: What You Need

To start a coaching practice you need: a business registration according to your local rules, clarity about taxes and VAT, professional liability insurance, a privacy statement and secure storage of client data, a standard coaching agreement, a simple way of working and a place where clients can find you. You do not need everything to be perfect before your first client, but the foundation should be in place.

January is the moment many coaches take the step. The exact rules differ per country, so this overview covers what applies almost everywhere, with pointers on what to check locally.

Please note: this article is a general overview, not legal or tax advice. Rules, rates and thresholds differ per country and situation, and they change. Always check the current rules with your business registry, tax authority or your own advisor. Last checked: October 2026.

Unsure about taxes or VAT? Ask an accountant or check your tax authority's website. Rules and thresholds change regularly.

Your Offer and Rate

  • Who do you work with? A clear target group helps from day one. See how to choose a coaching niche.
  • Which program format? For example six or eight sessions over three months. Read how to structure a 3-month coaching program.
  • Which rate? Look at what comparable coaches in your niche charge, calculate what you need and do not start too low. Raising your rate later is harder than you think.

Your Way of Working and Tools

You do not need a complicated system, but you do need a few fixed parts: an intake form, a fixed structure for sessions and notes, a calendar where clients can book and a secure place for client information. Your First Clients

  • Tell your network concretely who you are looking for, not just that you have started.
  • Have a findable profile with your specialism.
  • Offer a discovery call. See the coaching discovery call.
  • Ask for feedback after every program and, when it fits, for a referral.
