Growth Mindset in Coaching
A growth mindset is the belief that abilities can develop through effort, learning, feedback, and strategy, rather than being fixed traits. In coaching it is used to help a client turn thoughts like "I can't" or "I'm not good at this" into practice-oriented language. It is a powerful tool when a client feels limited by a fixed view of themselves.
What Is a Growth Mindset?
The idea of a growth mindset was popularized by psychologist Carol Dweck. A fixed mindset assumes that ability is set: you either have talent or you do not. A growth mindset assumes that ability can grow through effort, better strategy, feedback, and support. In coaching the goal is not empty positivity, but a realistic, learnable view of a challenge, one that keeps the client in motion instead of stuck.
Fixed Mindset Compared to Growth Mindset
| Fixed mindset | Growth mindset |
|---|---|
| Ability is fixed | Ability can develop |
| Avoids challenges | Sees challenges as practice |
| Gives up when it is hard | Adds effort and strategy |
| Feedback feels like criticism | Feedback is information |
How to Use a Growth Mindset in Coaching
- Notice a fixed statement the client makes, such as "I am not a numbers person"
- Add the word "yet" to hear how it changes, "I am not good at this yet"
- Look for effort, strategy, or support that could move the ability forward
- Reframe the belief into a growth version the client actually finds believable
- Choose one small way to practice it before the next session
Coaching Questions for a Growth Mindset
- What belief says this ability is fixed?
- What changes when you add the word "yet"?
- What effort or strategy could help you grow here?
- Who or what could support you in learning this?
- How will you practice this in the coming week?
When to Use a Growth Mindset
- When a client feels blocked by "I can't" thinking
- When a setback is being read as proof of a fixed limit
- When someone avoids a challenge out of fear of failing
Growth Mindset in FocusCoachee
FocusCoachee includes Growth Mindset as a coaching method. You can add it directly to a session, and the client stays an active participant: they capture the fixed thought, write a growth alternative, and track how they practice it. Because the work is saved, the client can look back and see the shift from "I can't" to "I am learning", so a change in mindset becomes visible over time.

FocusCoachee also lets you add your own methods. If you work with a different version of this tool, or have a framework you always use with clients, you can build it as a custom method and add it to any session - just like the built-in ones.
