Free Exploration in Coaching

Free Exploration is an open coaching method for moments when a client does not know where to begin. There is no fixed agenda, and the session follows the person instead of a plan. It uses five simple elements, situation, feeling, desire, obstacle, and strength, to turn a vague or unfocused moment into a clear direction. It is often the right choice for a first session, or for any time a client arrives without a ready question.

What Is Free Exploration?

Free Exploration is a starting point rather than a fixed exercise. It needs no preparation, and it works best when the client is given space to land before the questions begin. The method follows what is alive in the person right now, so two conversations rarely look the same. Its value is that it gives a light structure to an open conversation, enough to keep it moving, without forcing the client into a topic they are not ready for.

The Five Elements

The method moves through five simple elements, each opening a little more of the picture:

  • Situation - what is happening in the client's life right now
  • Feeling - what emotion the situation brings up
  • Desire - what the client actually wants to achieve or experience
  • Obstacle - what is holding them back from getting there
  • Strength - what quality or resource they already have to draw on

How to Use Free Exploration in Coaching

The method is a gentle path, not a script. A simple way to work through it:

  • Give the client a moment to arrive, and start from wherever their attention already is
  • Follow the five elements in order, but let the client linger where there is energy
  • Stay with open questions and resist the urge to solve anything early
  • Notice where situation, feeling, and desire connect, since that is often where the real question appears
  • Close by naming one clear direction or small next step

Coaching Questions for Free Exploration

Five questions carry the whole method, one for each element:

  • Situation: what is happening in your life right now?
  • Feeling: what feeling does this situation bring up?
  • Desire: what do you actually want to achieve or experience?
  • Obstacle: what is holding you back from getting what you want?
  • Strength: what strength or quality do you already have?

When to Use Free Exploration

Free Exploration fits the open moments in coaching:

  • In a first session, when there is no set topic yet
  • When a client arrives saying they are not sure what to work on
  • When a conversation feels stuck and needs space to breathe before it narrows

Free Exploration in FocusCoachee

FocusCoachee includes Free Exploration as a coaching method. You can add it directly to a session, and the client stays an active participant: they capture the five elements, reflect between sessions, and track the direction that emerges. Because the work is saved, an open conversation does not stay open forever, it becomes a clear starting point you can build on in the sessions that follow.

Want an open method that meets clients where they are? Explore the plans.

FocusCoachee also lets you add your own methods. If you work with a different version of this tool, or have a framework you always use with clients, you can build it as a custom method and add it to any session - just like the built-in ones.
