The PERMA model is a framework from positive psychology that describes five elements of lasting well-being: Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement. In coaching, it helps clients examine not just what is not working, but what truly contributes to a fulfilling life.

The Five Elements of PERMA

The model was developed by psychologist Martin Seligman and provides a concrete lens for well-being conversations:

  • P - Positive emotions - experiencing more joy, gratitude, and optimism
  • E - Engagement - being in flow, fully absorbed in meaningful activities
  • R - Relationships - positive connections with others
  • M - Meaning - belonging to and contributing to something larger than yourself
  • A - Achievement - pursuing and reaching goals, for the sake of accomplishment itself

Why PERMA Works Well in Coaching

Many clients come with burnout, a sense of emptiness, or the feeling that "everything is fine on paper, but something is missing." PERMA gives you a structured way to map where energy is flowing and where it is not.

Instead of focusing only on problems, PERMA coaching looks at strengths. What is already going well? Where is there energy? This makes the conversation constructive and future-oriented.

Using PERMA in Practice

As a coach, you can use PERMA as a reflection tool. Ask the client to score each element. This gives a quick insight into where the imbalance lies, and where small changes can have a big impact.

You can return to PERMA at the start or end of sessions to track progress over time, making growth tangible rather than just felt.

PERMA in FocusCoachee

FocusCoachee includes PERMA as a structured coaching method in the Pro plan. Coaches can add it to a session, and coachees can work with it independently between sessions. Reflections are saved and remain accessible throughout the coaching process.
