The GROW model is one of the most widely used frameworks in professional coaching. It gives sessions a clear structure without making them feel rigid, and it works just as well for goal setting as it does for solving a specific challenge. Here is how to use it effectively in your coaching sessions.
What is the GROW model?
GROW stands for Goal, Reality, Options, and Will (sometimes called Way Forward). Each letter represents a phase of the coaching conversation. The model helps move a client from where they are now to a clear commitment to action - in a single session or across a longer trajectory.
The four phases explained
Goal - What does the client want to achieve?
Start by clarifying what the client wants to get out of this session or this phase of their coaching. This is not always the same as their long-term objective. A session goal might be: "I want to decide how to approach this difficult conversation with my manager." Being specific here sets direction for everything that follows.
Reality - What is the current situation?
Before jumping to solutions, explore the actual situation. Ask questions that help the client see clearly: What has already been tried? What is working and what is not? What are the obstacles? This phase is about honest observation, not problem solving yet. It often surfaces assumptions the client did not know they were making.
Options - What could the client do?
This is where you generate possibilities. The coach's role here is not to provide answers but to help the client think beyond their first idea. Ask: What else could you do? What would you try if there were no limits? What has worked in similar situations? The goal is a list of real options - not a single predetermined answer.
Will - What will the client actually do?
Options only become progress when the client commits to action. Help them choose from the options they generated, set a concrete next step, and decide on a timeline. Ask: What will you do, and by when? What might get in the way, and how will you handle it? This phase transforms the conversation into accountability.
Tips for using GROW in practice
The model is a guide, not a script. Real conversations do not always move neatly from one phase to the next. A client might revisit Reality after exploring Options, or the Goal might shift once Reality is clearer. That is fine - the value of GROW is that it gives you a map, not a fixed route.
Keep your questions open. The more the client is talking and thinking, the better the model is working. Your job is to hold the structure while the client does the exploring.
Using GROW with FocusCoachee
FocusCoachee includes the GROW model as a built-in coaching method. Each phase is structured within the session flow, so both coach and client can work through it step by step. The client's reflections and commitments are saved to their timeline, making it easy to pick up where you left off in the next session. If you work with GROW regularly, having it integrated into your coaching platform keeps everything connected - from the first goal to the final action.
